Rethinking Local Infrastructure: Embedding Circularity in the Built Environment

    2024 Study Tour Report

    by Faina Kerr

The Local government sector plays a pivotal role in the development and maintenance of the built environment. They are responsible for managing a wide range of assets, including roads, parks, community facilities, and waste management systems. This stewardship is crucial for ensuring the sustainability and resilience of local areas.

The adoption of circular economy (CE) principles presents significant opportunities for local government to enhance their built environments. By focusing on resource efficiency, waste reduction, and the reuse of materials, councils can support their climate action goals, leading to reduced greenhouse gas emissions, lower operational costs, and the creation of more sustainable communities.

This report explores how circular ways of working and design can be integrated into public infrastructure projects within a local government context.
