Worldwide, our communities are increasingly vulnerable to severe weather events due to climate change, which is damaging infrastructure and raising costs for maintenance, rebuilding, and insurance. Locally in Victoria, extreme weather damage already costs about $2.7 billion a year. Additionally the construction of infrastructure contributes significantly to climate change inducing emissions. Victorian Government legislation is driving a sector wide response including emissions reduction and climate resilience. This report identifies the various climate hazards experienced in North America and the different management approaches the visited organisations are taking and how they are responding to the impacts.
